Exclusive: Plans for SubbuteoFest that will be the world’s biggest celebration of the game

A new Subbuteo Festival will launch in 2021 and is being labelled the biggest global Subbuteo event ever.

Subbuteo.Online understands organisers of a new Subbuteo festival are hoping to launch in 2021 in the South East and plans involve a major tournament, collector displays and sellers under one roof.

Set to be ‘complete indulgence of the game’, according to organisers, the festival would run over a weekend and would welcome people from across Europe.

They told us: “We are planning a pro tournament, an old traditional tournament, seller stands, the weird and wacky, collector displays (and) anything and everything Subbuteo related.”

The event will be named SubbuteoFest and could be backed by the English Subbuteo Association.

Despite an announcement of the event by Wobbly Hobby Shop, a Subbuteo shop and organiser of several clubs and competitions in the South East of England, it is still very early days and a venue has not been confirmed yet.

A venue will be chosen near London for the two-day event, according to organisers.

However, the move is another sign that Subbuteo is enjoying a growth in popularity in the country and would be welcomed by collectors and players across the region.

To be the biggest ever Subbuteo event SubbuteoFest 21 would need to be bigger than the annual collector’s fair held in Renshaw, Yorkshire, twice a year. That event brings collectors from all over Europe to buy and sell Subbuteo.

Other major events include the World Cup, a professionally-organised tournament using newer versions of table football with flatter bases. The next tournament will be in September 2020 and will see teams from across the world gather in Rome to compete for the table football World Cup title.

The ambitious plans for a major UK event follow announcements that up to five new Subbuteo clubs will be formed in the South East.

It is hoped the new clubs will eventually form a South East League and help to introduce more players to Subbuteo in the region. A possible launch could take place at SubbuteoFest 21.

Subbuteo.Online will bring more news of the event as we get it.
