Is this one of the rarest Subbuteo accessories ever made?

Roy of the Rovers is back with a bang.

The classic comic book featuring Roy Race and his Melchester Rovers side is back in book and comic form and you can even buy the famous red and yellow shirt.

So it is perfect timing for a particularly rare Subbuteo item to emerge – a corner kicker based on Roy Race himself. The corner kicker is wearing the Melchester Rovers kit complete with red shirt and single yellow stripe, while the long blonde hair is instantly recognisable as the star of the series.

Corner kickers in Subbuteo were introduced fairly early in the history of the game and usually came in red and blue. Even more modern corner kickers stuck to the original colours and this rare accessory could be one of the rarest around.

It was shared with us by John Parker on Twitter who confirmed it was an original Subbuteo product and has been in his collection for over 30 years.

The Roy Race corner kicker is not listed anywhere. We could not find it on Peter Upton’s superb Subbuteo website or on previous Subbuteo sales on eBay.

There are sure to be other examples around given the popularity of both Subbuteo and Roy of the Rovers three decades ago, but this is the first we have ever seen and looks to be a particularly rare Subbuteo find.

Other Roy of the Rovers Subbuteo is slightly more common but still a pretty good find. The Melchester Rovers team can go for big prices and feature Subbuteo’s only original blonde player in Roy Race.
