Arsenal will ditch cannon badge after one season as new 2024/25 kit revealed

Arsenal has launched the new 2024/25 home shirt featuring a simplistic cannon badge for the first time in 35 years. However, the club has already confirmed the cannon will be dropped for next season.

The club says the cannon badge, the main focus for the new shirt, will only appear on home, away and third kits for a single season. The move to use the cannon badge on the Arsenal shirts has proved a popular one with Gunners fans but it has now been confirmed the shirts will be one-off.

The club says: “The 24/25 season will see the iconic symbol feature across home, away and third kits for one season only – creating a fresh and forward-looking aesthetic, acting as the club’s compass guiding the teams forward as one in the pursuit of progress.”

The cannon has been featured on Arsenal kits for decades, appearing as the club’s badge in the 1970s and 1980s. According to Arsenal World: “It is also depicted on the club badge. “Cannons have featured on Arsenal crests since the 1880s, the first versions of which bore similarities to the coat of arms of what was the Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich.”

The kit design is centered around the use of the cannon badge – last worn in 1990/91 on an Arsenal shirt. The white and red kit also contoversially includes plenty of navy blue including large blue ‘swooshes’ across the back and shorts. The kit also has more white than usual, with the sides of the shirt using plenty of white panelling and only a small section of the middle using Arsenal’s traditional red.

As with all new Adidas kit launches the shirt also features the larger Adidas three stripes badge without the word ‘Adidas’ featuring. It ends speculation Adidas could use the iconic Trefoil logo used on the previous Arsenal cannon kit from the early 1990s.

Launching the kit, Sam Handy, SVP of Product and Design at Adidas said: “We anchored this season in the iconography of Arsenal – and there is no more iconic symbol for Arsenal than the cannon. In development, we revisited the archive and reviewed years of design and collaboration, the core elements of the club’s identity to players and supporters.

So, this season is all about the cannon, the role it plays in the legacy of the club and reintroducing it to a fresh generation of supporters and players.”

The new Arsenal kit is priced at £80 for an adult shirt and £60 for a children’s shirt. It is on sale now in the Arsenal store.
