Last year we called Subbuteo’s tie in with Pretty Green the best new Subbuteo product for years. We then said the electronic scoreboard was one of the best original Subbuteo products for a while.
Well everybody strap in because the world’s slowest hot streak is continuing and it is the best one yet.
Subbuteo product launches are few and far between these days but the brand does love a collaboration and this time it has struck gold with iconic UK sports brand Mitre. You will remember Mitre from the beautiful 1990s Premier League balls including the Mitre Ultra and Mitre Delta?
Well now Mitre has joined forces with Subbuteo to launch a full size five Mitre ball complete with the Delta name and the Subbuteo logo. Limited to just 300, the ball is an homage to both classic Mitre balls and the Subbuteo brand, which has been a mainstay for 75 years on UK table tops.
Priced at £45, the Subbuteo Mitre Delta is on sale now here.
But that is not all. Subbuteo is also supplying the balls for the upcoming Subbuteo World Cup set to take place in Tunbridge Wells this week. The balls feature the distinctive 1990s style but also includes the Subbuteo logo featuring the man kicking the ball as seen on 1970s Subbuteo boxes.
The balls are also on sale for £11 on the Mitre website. You get three balls per blister pack and you can get them here.
The balls are superb. They are exactly the sort of collaboration Subbuteo should be doing. Mitre balls have been part of the official Subbuteo range since the 1980s, when simple red, blue and black Mitre balls were sold in blister packs.
These gave way to the Premier League balls, which were included in Premier League editions in the 1990s when Subbuteo had the official license for the then Premiership divison.
We took delivery of one of the size five balls in Mitre display box and the ball is excellent quality, with a simple but effective design that does everything correct. It’s nostalgic, well designed and celebrates both Mitre and Subbuteo history in an effortless manner.
The three new Mitre balls for Subbuteo games are a superb edition to the range that is sadly lacking licenses. Both an excellent addition to any display of Subbuteo balls or for use in games, it is a detailed and well though design that really highlights how successful the brand could be if it continued to launch quality products like this.
Mitre says: “We’re proud to announce we’re the Official Ball provider for the 2024 Subbuteo World Cup @fistfwc2024
“Taking place this weekend in Tunbridge Wells, UK. The home of Subbuteo… yes it really is, coming home.
“The tournament will see over 400 players from 26 countries participate with over 58 games played simultaneously in the early stages. We’re looking forward to seeing the match balls in some spinning action.”
Like the Pretty Green collaboration, Subbuteo does offer the license to other brands to use. Mitre is the first sports brand to take up the challenge of designing a new Subbuteo product that Subbuteo fans and casual football fans will both want. With the new Delta ball they have cracked it. Hopefully there will be more to come.
