Exclusive: No new Subbuteo sets or teams in 2018, confirm Hasbro

There will be no new Subbuteo launched this year by Hasbro, the toy maker has confirmed.

Subbuteo.Online asked Hasbro and its UK licensee Paul Lamond games if there were plans for new teams, accessories or a new catalogue for new Subbuteo products.

While the official press channels declined to respond, the official Subbuteo Facebook page did reply confirming there were no plans to launch any new Subbuteo teams or sets this year. However, it did suggest more teams could be on their way in future.

It said: “We don’t have new Champions League accessories or teams in the new catalogue, but we don’t discard future productions.”

Spain-based Hasbro, which owns the rights to Subbuteo, last launched a new edition in time for the 2018 World Cup. Named the World Edition, the box set included three international teams along with a pitch, goals, balls and accessories.

Previously Hasbro has launched a series of licensed teams and box sets with an emphasis on Spanish La Liga sides such as European giants Real Madrid and Barcelona. There have been very few new English league teams launched by the brand in recent years, although Paul Lamond Games has the rights to sell Subbuteo in the UK and has a selection of teams for sale.

Hasbro no longer adds reference numbers to Subbuteo teams but the traditional numbering is used in Italy, where another licensee has launched a new set of Subbuteo teams in keeping with the classic Subbuteo design.

Centuria has launched 80 classic international teams in the style of Subbuteo heavyweights, starting with Italy 1982. The teams are available in Italy only as part of a fortnightly magazine issue and is not available in the UK.

The incredibly detailed teams, named the La Leggenda Platinum Edition, will be the only new Subbuteo launched between now and Christmas.

Fans in the UK who want to get their hands on a new set can either buy one of the existing editions or the vintage-style John Lewis Subbuteo set, which has been launched in time for Christmas.
